Understanding Septic Tank Systems

Septic Tank Plumbing

What Is a Septic Tank and How Does It Work?

Septic systems are an on-site wastewater treatment method commonly used in homes that don’t have access to a public sewer system. In a septic system, pipes move wastewater out from your sinks, toilets, showers, and laundry and into a septic tank for treatment.

Septic tanks are watertight containers buried underground and can be made from concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. When wastewater collects in a septic tank, it settles and separates into three layers: scum, sludge, and effluent.

  • Scum is made up of grease, fats, and oils that float to the top of the tank.
  • Sludge is a mix of solid waste material that sinks to the bottom of the tank.
  • Effluent is the water layer that sits between septic scum and sludge.

Bacterial processes play an important role in the septic tank, breaking down organic material that sits in the scum and sludge layers. As the organic material is digested into smaller pieces, it enters the effluent layer as floating particulates.

When effluent is moved out of the septic tank, it gets distributed through a drain field. Drain fields, also called leach fields, typically include a series of trenches designed to absorb and filter wastewater contaminants. Microorganisms are also present in the soil to help digest organic material in effluent. By the end of this process, treated wastewater should be purified and reclaimed in groundwater reservoirs for reuse.

What Are the Signs of a Septic Problem?

The biggest issue that can occur in a septic system is when untreated wastewater ends up going somewhere it shouldn’t. This commonly manifests as sewage that comes back up into your home through the pipes or leaks into the ground outside the drain field.

Here are some signs that your septic system is failing:

  • Clogged pipes: Clogs can build up in pipes between your home and the septic tank or between the septic tank and the drain field. Blockages can happen if inappropriate materials are flushed down the drain or if pipes are damaged by tree roots, soil movement, or some other means. Slow drains and gurgling sounds are common symptoms of an existing drain clog.
  • Sewage backup: Wastewater coming back up from sinks, baths, and toilets can happen if your septic tank is full, you have a blocked septic filter, or if there is a sudden wastewater overload. Wastewater overload occurs when the amount of wastewater created at one time exceeds your septic tank’s holding capacity (e.g., doing laundry, dishes, and taking a shower simultaneously).
  • Standing water or damp spots: If the drain field is oversaturated, it may leak out into the surrounding area. This can create to lush green spots in the drain field in addition to wet spots. You may also notice bad odors near the tank or drain field.
  • Nitrates in well water: If you use well water, one sign that sewage has leaked into your drinking water is a high level of nitrates. You should already be testing your well water quality, so this would be a clear sign it’s time to call a plumber for repairs.

Septic problems pose serious safety risks that must be addressed immediately.

Sewage contains pathogens and other contaminants that can make you sick and pollute water for drinking, swimming, and agricultural activities. That’s why routine maintenance and inspections every 1–3 years is so critical for the safety of your septic system, your family, and the environment.

How Do You Know When a Septic System Needs to be Replaced?

The lifespan of septic systems vary by manufacturer, installation method, exposure to the elements, and how well it is maintained. Some septic tanks can last 50 years or more, but you should start planning for a replacement after 25–30 years of use.

Preparing for an upgrade before you absolutely need it will give you the flexibility to decide whether to replace or wait based on the results of your septic system inspection every 1–3 years. This will also prevent the need for an emergency replacement further down the line if your septic system fails.
