The same symptom can come from very different problems, which is why a proper diagnosis matters. Here are a few common issues we look for when your heating system isn’t working the way it should.
If your furnace clicks, tries to start, and then gives up, a worn igniter or a dirty flame sensor may be the reason. Either one can cause a furnace to shut down before it heats the house.
If the burners light but little warm air reaches your rooms, the cause may be a worn blower motor, a clogged filter, or blocked vents or return grilles. Restricted airflow can also leave some rooms cold while others stay warm.
Dead batteries, the wrong setting, or a wiring fault can keep a thermostat from telling the furnace to run. Sometimes the problem is the control board inside the furnace instead.
Heat pumps have their own problems, like lukewarm air or a system that won’t switch from cooling to heating. The cause may be the controls, the refrigerant level, or the valve that switches the system between heating and cooling. For cooling problems, learn more about AC repair.
Spending money on a furnace that’s close to the end is frustrating, and so is replacing one that could have kept going. A repair is usually the smarter choice when:
It may be time to talk about replacement when:
We’ll look at more than your furnace’s age, and we won’t pressure you either way.
If a repair will keep your furnace going for several more winters, we’ll tell you. If it would only buy a little time, you’ll hear that from us too, along with what replacing your furnace would involve.
A furnace can sit idle from spring through fall, then run hard on cold inland nights from late fall into March. A yearly tune-up gives a technician the chance to catch a worn part before it leaves you without heat.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends a professional heating checkup every year. Depending on your system, a tune-up may include checks of the burners, the safety controls, and the airflow, along with a look at the thermostat and filter.
If something is starting to wear, we’ll point it out before it turns into a bigger repair.
“My system needed some items replaced through wear and tear by the weather. Steve advised me of . . . the issues with my system and explained why. Steve was a pleasure to work and communicate with.” —Chris S.

Often it’s something simple, such as a clogged filter or a thermostat setting, like the fan switched to “on” instead of “auto.” It can also point to an ignition problem. If those simple fixes don’t help, give us a call.
That’s often short cycling. A dirty filter that restricts airflow or a worn flame sensor can both make a furnace shut down early. Replace the filter first, and if it keeps happening, call us, since frequent starts and stops can wear out parts sooner.
A boom when the burners light, a rattle, or a squeal can point to a startup problem, a loose part, or a worn blower component. If a noise is new or getting louder, turn the system off at the thermostat and schedule a repair.
The visit and the diagnosis are free, and you’ll have the repair price before we start. It depends on the cause: a loose wire and a failed blower motor can both leave you without heat and cost very different amounts, so we diagnose the furnace in person first.
In many cases, yes. Replacing an igniter or a thermostat is usually a single-visit job. A bigger repair or a part that has to be ordered can take longer, and we’ll give you the timeline before we start.
