Plumbing Maintenance for Your Home or Business

No matter the time of year, you should regularly maintain your plumbing system. After all, it affects the kitchen, bathroom, heating, and ventilation systems. Worst case scenario, if a plumbing issue goes undetected and untreated for some time, it can result in an emergency plumbing issue, which may have been avoidable by performing some routine maintenance. While bringing in a professional to complete a plumbing inspection is best, there are several steps you can take on your own to check the plumbing system’s performance.

Look for Leaks

Throughout the home or business, you should look for leaks to prevent possible water or structural damage. Some areas to check include:

Exposed pipes. This does not apply to all properties, but for those that do have exposed piping, ensure no leaks are visible. Others have concealed pipes where they are behind the wall with an added layer of protection.
Toilets and sinks. Examine the toilet bowl and tank for any noticeable cracks. Another way to test the toilet is by adding a few food coloring drops into the toilet tank. Wait about a half-hour, and if you notice any color within the bowl, your toilet probably has a leak. Also, check the angle stops and supply lines underneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks. You will want to check for any corrosion or small leaks and if found, we recommend replacing these items before they become a bigger issue and burst which can cause water damage. Any other appliances. This includes the dishwasher, ice maker supply line, outdoor hose faucet, and washing machine supply hose if applicable. Look out for bulges in the piping and any sources of a leak. If any are not running properly, be sure to have them repaired or replaced.

Drain Cleaning

A big part of protecting a healthy plumbing system is having clear drains and avoiding clogs. Across bathrooms and kitchens, we recommend installing strainers to catch any food or hair that would otherwise fall down to the pipes. By doing this, it lessens the chance of a clog and slows down how often you may find yourself doing cleanings.

Next Level Maintenance

These are just a few things to be aware of with your plumbing system, but other appliances should not be overlooked. Water heaters, for instance, may require a repair from time to time, along with your sewer lines, if applicable. Just like the pipes, sewer lines can back up and need drain cleaning services, such as hydro jetting. Luckily, here at Guardian Plumbers, our trained professionals offer these services and more locally in Temecula, CA. Give us a call today to learn more!
